Henry Ford Hospice Opens Inpatient Residence in Southfield
DETROIT - Statistics show that 90 percent of Americans would prefer to die at home. But what if they don't have a home or caregiver to assist them? Henry Ford is opening a second inpatient Hospice Residence to provide a need in the community.
Henry Ford Hospice-Residence Oakland, is the first full service Hospice Residence in Oakland County, an innovative resource designed to provide a home-like environment with care provided round-the-clock for individuals with a life-expectancy of six months or less.
A ribbon cutting ceremony will be held at 4 p.m., Wednesday, June 18 followed by tours from 4:30 -7p.m. at the Lake Land Center, 26900 Franklin Rd. (one mile south of 11 Mile Rd.) in Southfield. Tours will also be held Thursday, June 19 from 4:30 -7p.m.
During the event, hors d'oeuvres and refreshments will be provided. Participants will also be able to meet members of the specially trained staff and tour the 12 private- bedroom-style suites.
Individuals who meet the criteria can stay as long as the service is needed. Respite care is also offered for caregivers who need temporary hospice residence support for their loved ones.
Each room has home-like amenities including comfortable furnishings with an adjacent restroom, a television and seating area. The facility also offers a spa tub and large walk-in shower room as well as a spacious lounge area available for residents and family use.
The Residence is staffed by nurses and nurse aides in addition to a social worker, chaplain and volunteer coordinator. Volunteers provide companionship for patients and family members. Specially trained Henry Ford Medical Group palliative care and hospice physicians work with the patient's physician to provide pain and symptom management.
"Thanks to the generosity and annual support of organizations like the Women's Committee for Hospice Care, individual donations and various fundraising efforts, we are able to provide industry leading hospice care, while maintaining one of the lowest room and board costs for a hospice residence," says Lori Crow, R.N., vice president, Henry Ford Hospice.
The cost for Henry Ford Hospice Residence-Warren and the new Henry Ford Hospice Residence in Southfield is $110 per day for room and board. A few insurance plans also provide for room and board charges.
Henry Ford Hospice is the largest hospice in Michigan accredited by CHAP, (Community Health Accreditation Program), a national health care accrediting agency. Its eight offices throughout metro Detroit provide for the needs of pediatric and adult patients and their loved ones.
